The Cook-Off closed sunday with awards, music, all of the food gone and many happy people
Patrick O’Heffernan (Ajijic, Jal).- The 42nd Annual Mexican National Cook-Off closed Sunday afternoon with dancing, awards and very happy people.
The final numbers won’t been in for several days but indications are that it exceeded its past average attendance of 2000 people a day, and over a hundred vendors sold everything from art to leatherwork to rebozos to sweets.
The three-day event at the Tobolandia Water Park to raise money for nine charities is one of Lakeside’s biggest events. On Saturday, the Cook-Off began with a parade from downtown Ajijic that ended at the Cook-Off stage with dancing led by Paola Waterlott, many children in costumes and the Big Red Chili himself. While the audience was waiting for the parade’s arrival they were entertained by Coro Redes y Cantos de Chapala and the results of the Saturday raffle.
Bands playing at the Chili Cook-Off included Blue Jay Slim and the Blues Machine, Tommy Banks and No Borders Band, guitarist Juan Costañon, the Aloha Rock Band, the Jam B and with Jonathan Guzman, and many more. The Cook-Off ended Sunday right on time with the award for the Chili Cook-Off Contest.
First Prize Winner was Hacienda del Lago in Ajijic, which also won The People’s Choice Prize, Second Prize went to Centro de Desarrollo for the hot dogs, Third Prize went to the Lake City Craft Burger in Ajijic.
