Sofía Medeles (Ajijic).- At least eight trees have fallen during the last month in different parts of Ajijic, with the onset of the rainy season.
Since the beginning of June, several large trees have fallen: two at the foot of the Chapala-Jocotepec highway, in the eastern zone; one in La Floresta; one more in a reserve in La Canacinta; one in Aldama at the intersection with Guadalupe Victoria; another in Encarnación Rosas at the intersection with the highway; and another one in Privada Libertad, near Las 6 Esquinas.
Actting Ajijic Delegado Maximiano Macías Arceo said that the delegation is aware of the situation.
«We are not only aware of the fallen trees, but of those that are at risk. Together with (the directorate of) Ecology and personnel from Civil Protection, we checked the trees and marked with paint those that pose more risk. For example, on the road in front of Plaza Bugambilias, where two trees have already fallen, we will have to remove at least five trees that are already dead. Of course, remain have root containment, and we will fill the root holes so the medium will not be affected and we can return to replant them later. ,” he told Laguna.
The trees marked for removal can be seen along the bicycle trail and in the center of Ajijic. No exact number was given, but in a tour made by Semanario Laguna personnel, at least seven trees could be counted.
Macías Arceo added that for the moment they are working on a priority basis, since they lack the personnel to take immediate care of all the trees marked for intervention (pruning) or removal.
This problem has been present since the beginning of the year. Pruning has not been kept up with trees that threaten power and communication lines. Failures in electricity, internet and telephone services have occurred as trees fall or branches break off.
Macías Arceo added that not only the review of the inspectors, but also citizen complaints, will help to avoid incidents of this type. The number of the staff for reports is 376 766 1760 from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or 33 1537 9134 for emergencies.
