It is common to hear that people after the age of 50 have some urinary incontinence. Unfortunately, when I say common, I mean it is taken as something normal and inevitable. We also hear about a person’s bladder «falling out» and we have normalized this as well. Adult diapers that used to be available only in specialized pharmacies can now be found in every drugstore and shopping mall.
All my life I have enjoyed physical activity: from sports, professional dance, aerobics, spinning, Latin rhythms, etc. In none of these did anyone explain the pelvic floor to me. I came to learn this in the last 22 years through the practice of Hatha Yoga, the Feldenkrais Method and the work of Mathias Alexander.
I was very surprised to learn that in some Eastern techniques the use and knowledge of this muscle group has been of utmost importance for more than 3,000 years. In the West, until 30 years ago the closest and most familiar exercises were the Kegel exercises, generally prescribed for women who were pregnant or had just had a baby and had lost control of their bladder.
Quoting the medical journal Las Condes (Elsevier.es) I find a description that seems very accurate:
«The pelvic floor is a structure of muscles and connective tissue that provides support and suspension structures to the pelvic and abdominal organs. Its main component is the levator ani muscle, a muscle that covers most of the pelvis. The pelvic organs can be divided into three compartments: anterior (bladder and urethra), middle (uterus and vagina, or prostate and seminal vesicles) and posterior (rectum, anal canal and sphincteric apparatus). The pelvic floor is involved in each of these, determining not only mechanical support but also participating in urinary and fecal continence.”
In Eastern disciplines such as Yoga, we are taught that the pelvic floor represents the strength of the roots to the land and to the tribe where we were received; it also represents the strength of our identity within this tribe, family or lineage, as well as the power to realize life projects and sustain us in periods of crisis.
In these ancestral disciplines, anatomy is not separated from a person’s emotional situation; on the contrary, anatomy (muscles, connective tissues, bone structures, blood vessels, and electrical impulse connections of the nervous system) is joined to its emotional representation. For example, we are told that the first three chakras (energy centers) are represented in the pelvis and are connected to our personal development, emotional blockages and some diseases as they are also related to our basic needs such as excretion and sex.
To have a healthy pelvic floor it is important to avoid irritation of the intestines as well as overfilling when we eat. It is also important to not ignore the urge to evacuate either the colon or the bladder. For the welfare of this muscular structure, we must perform exercises that help us to preserve mobility and strength, and to generate rhythm, coordination and fluidity in the pelvis and spine.
Taking care of your pelvic floor will help you to enjoy freedom and lightness, and to have a deeper connection with your tribe, your partner and yourself.

Carlos Miguel Real Navarro, new municipal director of the Human Rights Commission in Chapala.
Jazmín Stengel (Chapala).- The new municipal director of the Human Rights Commission (CDH) in Chapala, Carlos Miguel Real Navarro, expressed concern that «the culture of respect is being lost,» in an exclusive interview with Semanario Laguna.
Since his appointment, which took place on May 26, the lawyer with a master’s degree in Constitutional Law and Amparo ( people’s right to have access to the courts) has observed countless violations of the human rights of the inhabitants of Chapala and its delegations.
Real Navarro believes that education is the basis of everything, and that respect and self-respect must be recognized in order not to harm or cause harm to our human rights. That is why the 29-year-old will focus on education while addressing the present problems.
Among the faults he can point out are complaints about Public Safety, mostly issued during the 2018-2021 administration, where abuses of power and conflicts between hierarchies within the same department were mentioned, as well as from municipal and state officials towards the community. The lack of response to reports of serious crimes and lack of agility in the search for missing persons are other examples.
That is why Real Navarro wishes to use his knowledge to defend his people. «I am a citizen more than anything else. I like to help and solve people’s problems,» said the official.
Real Navarro has started to manage the first support required by the National Institute for Adult Education (INEA) and the Colegio de Bachilleres del Estado de Jalisco (Cobaej) so that citizens who no longer have access to the primary school system can acquire literacy skills, complete secondary or preparatory education as well as receive workforce training.
He noticed that minors stop attending school at an early age, so Real Navarro will join the prevention programs managed by the Women’s Institute, Ciudad Niñez (Childhood Legal Services) and the Dif de Chapala (Social Assistance Program). One such program is the Barrios de Paz (Neighborhoods of Peace) program which includes ways to reinforce and strengthen the institutional capacities of the municipality.
The newly appointed director is aware of the legal situations of the 39 boys and girls of the municipality who are in foster homes. Some of the minors removed from their families between 2018 and 2021 had inconsistencies in the legal process.
In certain cases, the minors were attending school and were being cared for by their grandparents or close relatives. The government decided to remove them without an investigation. The legal process began after they were already in shelters, said Real Navarro. This is a clear violation of the minors’ human rights by the municipal and state authorities at the time.
Real Navarro promised to make sure that the authorities respect their work as public servants. When a public servant receives complaints that show that he does not perform his duties or ignores those duties the municipal General Secretary and Mayor Alejandro de Jesús Aguirre Curiel can remove the person from his position as a municipal official.
Real Navarro is a native of Chapala. He has dedicated his life to defending the rights of the people as an activist from his private office, in the companies he has worked for, and now as a public official. In addition, he hopes to be named president of the ECOFAM (Esfuerzo y Comisión por las Familias) association this year.

Paving progress in March to the second week of May. Photo: Laguna Weekly.
Editor.- Paving work on Francisco I. Madero street in San Juan Cosalá, begun in March, has at last been completed, according to the Government of Jocotepec.
Work at the site, delayed for more than 15 days to a lack of materials, was resumed after an adult couple and their children were hired to finish the job, which they did in under two weeks.
Delegate Carlos Vázquez confirmed that the concrete and stone paving work had been completed and that the street was ready for normal use.
Some construction materials remained on site, but,Vázquez said,»It’s finished, it’s ready,»
Neighbors reportedly welcomed the improved mobility and accessibility on the street, including for services such as garbage collection, water and gas deliveries.
Work on the street had been paused during the second week of May, due partly to complaints from neighbors.

Hundreds of women lined up outside the Marcos Castellanos auditorium waiting to registe
Héctor Ruiz Mejía (Jocotepec).- The first «Fuerza Mujeres» (Strong Women) registration was held in Jocotepec on May 31. The event opened at 9 am, but women lined up starting at 5 am to try to receive a token to register.
About 200 women showed up in hopes of registering for a 15,000 peso grant and an electronic tablet, to be used for the development of their business. Only about 60 women were actually able to register. Registration does not guarantee a grant. Among the 60 women who managed to register, approximately 25 women will receive a grant.
Cassandra Reyes Morales, head of the Substantive Equality Directorate said that in-person registration was part of the problem. In the two previous years of the program, registration was done online. She explained, «it was a bit complicated, since many more women attended in person to apply. Another issue was that registration opened at 9 am for everyone, so many arrived at the published time of 9 am, only to find out that a line had been forming since 5 am.”
More than half of the applicants left upset and without a token. Social networks were alive with complaints about how the event was organized. Many on social media complained that not everyone trying to register actually needed the grant, or had a business use for it.
