Recently Teya Ryan, the former Executive Vice President and General Manager of CNN, visited the offices of Semanario Laguna to see how local news is gathered in Mexico. She was impressed not only with the quality of the reporting, but with its Independence. “Semanario Laguna is so important because it keeps the ideal of truthful, accurate, unbiased journalism alive at a time when newspapers in the United States are under attack and closing down,” she told the staff. “What you do here,” she said, “is not only excellent reporting but vital to independent journalism everywhere.”

Semanario Laguna is the major source of news and information for the Spanish-speaking people in Lakeside — and now includes English stories for the Ex-pat community-. To insure that it continues to provide the independent journalism noted by Ms. Ryan to both Mexicans and Ex-pats, 20 important artists have donated a porcentaje their works for an auction to raise funds for the newspaper. The money will be used to guarantee the paper’s future by eliminating debt, expanding its office, buying new equipment and giving the staff their first raise in seven years.
The auction will be held 9 November 2019 at the La Cochera Cultural on street Javier Mina 49, from 4 pm to 8 pm. The event will feature free margaritas, food, music by Juan Castañón, a raffle for an etching by the renowned artist from Oaxaca, Manuel Felguérez. Raffle tickets are available at the Intercam bank table at Lake Chapala Society -noon to 2:00pm- or at the Semanario Laguna offices at Aldama 12 in Ajijic, from 9am to 6pm.
