Students of the Foránea No.1 José Vasconcelos high school during the first day of anti-addiction talks/workshops.
Jazmín Stengel (Chapala).- Addiction prevention workshops will be given in public and private high schools in the municipality to raise awareness among adolescents in Chapala.
«Many things can give meaning to your life, but drugs will never be one of them,» was said during the launch of the program on March 14, at the José Vasconcelos Secondary School Number 1 in the municipality. The age of first substance use dropped from 18 to 10 years of age in the last 12 years.
The work team of the Municipal Commission Against Addictions, formed by counselors Luis Manuel Ramirez, Jaime Humberto Cortes Rios, Juan Carlos Garcia, and six other integral supporters are dedicated to informing the students of the municipality about the hazards of drug use.
During the workshop they discuss that addictions not only depend on synthetic or natural drugs or medicines. Today’s children tend to become dependent on technology and the internet as well.
The first phase of the program took place from March 14 to 24. Seven hundred and thirty-three students divided into 21 groups, about half in the morning shift and the rest in the afternoon from the José Vasconcelos high school were trained through talks and workshops informed Luis Ramírez, in charge of the coordination.
The next stage will be to instruct the adolescents of Technical High School 83 to learn to say «NO» and to know how to choose their friends well, thus preventing them from falling into the temptation of bad habits, said Ramirez.
The program, coordinated by the State Council for Prevention Against Addictions and the Ministry of Health, is executed by the Municipal Commission Against Addictions and its main objective is to raise awareness among young people when it comes to making decisions in their daily lives.

The new entrance to Jardín de Niños Aurelia Flores will be a corridor located between the CETAC high school and the future offices of the Secretaría de Cultura. Photo: Sofía Medeles.
Sofía Medeles (Ajijic).- During his visit to Ajijic on March 25, the Governor of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro Ramírez, said that it will take approximately one month to provide an entrance to the Aurelia Flores Kindergarten, which was blocked by the remodeling of the Auditorio de la Ribera.
This new entrance consists of a corridor between the Ajijic campus of the Center for Technological Studies in Continental Waters (CETAC) and the building where the offices of the Ministry of Culture will be located. Previously, the entrance to the kindergarten was through the same access as the auditorium.
«I asked them to speed up the work so that the children would not be at risk, because it is under construction. We have already started to free the passage, only the floor needs to be done. I hope that in a month it will be ready and working properly,» said Governor Alfaro Ramirez.
The director of the parents’ committee, Lucia Padilla, advised that they have not been informed about the conclusion of the work being done for this new access to the preschool, in addition they had hoped that the entrance would be a little bigger.
«We wanted to ask for a slightly larger entrance, at least two meters, but we could not talk to the architect and the entrance was left at approximately one meter and 40 centimeters. We have not been told when the work will be finished, or anything else,» she commented.
Previously, several parents complained that, since the construction of the auditorium was in progress, the access through the main door of the auditorium was closed for the safety of the children. The problem has existed since the beginning of on-site classes in August 2021. The parents pointed out that the provisional entrance, which was through the Cruz Azul sports field, was uncomfortable for them and the children, especially in rainy weather and that the work did not seem to be progressing on an entrance exclusively for the students of the school.
In addition, the parents pointed out the poor condition of the classrooms, bathrooms and open spaces of the kindergarten after the pandemic.

Public security elements arrived at the El Molino delegation after a report of armed persons. Photo: Courtesy.
Gunshots were fired around 10 am Monday, March 14 near J. Vicente Negrete school in El Molino, and armed individuals were seen in the area. Authorities took steps to safeguard students and teachers.
School officials said a normal school day was in progress when students and teachers heard gunshots near the school, and the children became frightened. Some students looked out the window and saw people with weapons hiding near the school. That caused panic among the more than 300 students and educational staff. Everyone took shelter in a classroom designated as a hiding place and remained there for about one hour.
“The children were the ones who saw them hiding,” said one school official. “It was horrible because everyone got scared and we quickly had to take shelter inside a special classroom. We thought the shooting would break out here outside.”
Phone calls came in quickly from concerned parents, but some officials who were interviewed said the police took around 40 minutes to answer the emergency call.
Some parents were upset about the incident and said they were worried about taking their children to school again. By press time for this edition, a large percentage of the students considered attending classes online instead of in person.
“We left the Covid pandemic to return to the pandemic of insecurity,” said one of the parents. “In truth, that claims more lives than the virus.”
Despite the reports and the testimonies of those affected, the Social Communication Department of the Jocotepec City Hall said nothing happened.

The mother of the victim involved in screaming and crying during the demonstration.
Jazmín Stengel (Chapala).- After the demonstration called by Daniela Baéz, the former student of the Chapala Regional High School who accused him of sexual abuse, a professor voluntarily resigned from the institution, while the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) stated that it will investigate the case.
The protest held on March 14, began at the school campus, traveled along the main avenue of Chapala, Francisco I. Madero, and ended in front of the City Hall building; Approximately 200 people attended with homemade signs, shouting slogans demanding justice .
The dozens of demonstrators shouted «David harasser, Ramón cover-up», referring to the Professor and to the head of the school where the alleged abuse occurred. They also chanted, «The school does not take care of me, my friends take care of me», as they marched carrying banners reading : «Teachers or Pigs?», «Reputation is more important than the safety of the students» and «I want to study without fear», among other messages.
A communiqué issued by the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) on March 15, the day after the demonstration stated that «The professor indicated has voluntarily stepped down and will remain away from his duties until the investigations are concluded.”
In the document, the University emphasized that it had communicated with the affected student, as well as her family, to offer them advice, support and a guarantee to carry out the due process.
It was only on Wednesday, March 16, that the victim announced on social networks that she had formally filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, as well as with the Office for the Defense of University Rights (DDU), an agency of the highest university in Jalisco.
The victim during the demonstration, at the end of her interviews with the media.
During the March 14 march, not only the name of Professor David was heard, but also that of four other teachers from the same high school; however, the director of the Municipal Institute for Women, Alicia Medeles Córdova, declared that this is the only case that has been followed up so far.
The teacher was pointed out by a former student for alleged acts of sexual abuse when she was 15 years old, seven years ago, in 2015. Daniela uploaded a publication describing her case in her social networks.
In what the young woman has publicly disclosed is that the v50-year old teacher David took her on seven occasions over a nine-month period to two houses he rented in the Plaza de Toros and Chapala Haciendas neighborhoods.
«He would place us naked in front of a computer and touch me or make me touch him. He probably has photos and/or video of us (because the camera always had the light on) «After the first encounter I went to the high school psychologist, Anel Padilla, to tell her EVERYTHING, because she was confused. Her answer was «that if we both wanted to, then it wasn’t bad».
Today I understand that whether you want to or not, it IS A CRIME. Fortunately at the last meeting a relative of his wife saw us enter the house and went to look for my mom. A letter was filed in the high school, to leave a record. However, in order to «take care» of me and my «prestige» nothing was done», the young woman wrote in the filed letter .
Laguna contacted the professor to request an interview, but the University of Guadalajara forbade him to talk about the case until the investigations were concluded.
