Stephen W. Heffernan. New York 8023 Subway, part of the show at Emma’s Deli.

Patrick O’Heffernan (Ajijic).-Ajijic resident Stephen W. Heffernan (no relation) opened a show of his Street Life in New York City in the 1970’s at Emma’s Deli,  a series if fine black and white photographic prints showing not only the quirks and personalities of the streets of the US’s largest city, but the almost infinite greyscale graduations of his Ansel-Adams-influenced exposure, developing  and printing process, now forgotten in the digital photo age.

 Heffernan has traveled the world, especially Latin America and Cuba, taking photographs of street life in the style of the legendary Edward Weston. His photos have been displayed in galleries and museums, including the Fototeca de Cuba in Havana. His many series include street life and scenes from Europe, México, Namibia, Nicaaragua, South Africa , the USA, and Cuba.

 “During the 1970’s I learned to make fine prints, guided by the classic books of Ansel Adams  and delving into the history of photography,”  says Heffernan, noting that  “ Edward Weston was my first inspiration but, aesthetically my eye was drawn to the renowned European photojournalists and ‘street’ photographers. This show reflects that influence.”

The photographs displayed  at Emma’s Deli have been curated from the earliest period of his 50-year career. The show will be up for three months Emma’s Deli is at Ramon Colon #5, Ajijic.

Sofía Medeles (Ajijic).- Three of the seven floors built by developers of the boutique hotel under construction La Floresta will have to be removed, following an agreement between representatives of Club Náutico and members of the Fraccionamiento La Floresta. 

The president of the Asociación de Colonos del Fraccionamiento La Floresta, Fernando Plata, said that after approximately seven years of conflict, the problem was finally resolved with an agreement unprecedented in conflicts of this type, given the legal framework in Mexico. 

The developers must remove three floors of the seven that have already been  built, and instead of constructing the  three buildings originally  approved – one for 8 stories – only one four story  building with a  Roof Garden  can be constructed.

Plata explained that the  court trials and the  negotiations to reach  an agreement with which both parties were satisfied took about seven years. He added that the approval and beginning of the  project  were irregular and were handled without informing the administration of the subdivision.

«Construction or modification projects in La Floresta first go through the colonos association to be approved or rejected, according to the regulations and norms of the area. This project never went through the office and we only found out about it after construction began,» said Fernando. 

The neighbors were even more surprised when they learned of the magnitude of the project: three buildings of five stories each. They were also surprised at the time period the developer got the approvals;  according to the representative’s calculations, it was between 2012 and 2014, and the work began in 2015, completely unknown to the neighbors.

«The subdivision  (La Floresta) has been residential, low-density and single-family since it was created. Over time, some of the local names  have changed, but the same character has been maintained. In addition to these characteristics, there is a maximum of two stories and a height limit that today is six meters and 30 centimeters. The Hotel Real de Chapala and the Club Nautico de Chapala, were originated with the subdivision, and adhered to the rules of this,» added Plata.

In 2016, with two lawsuits and a building that already had six floors built, the neighbors  managed to get a judge to suspend the work.  However, the Chapala administration of  Javier Degollado González (2015-2018), did not comply with the order until at least a year and a half after it was issued. But a few days  after the suspension, the permit  was modified and a license for eight floors was authorized, ignoring the judges order.

The president of the colonos reported that it was not until 2021, at the end of the administration of Moises Alejandro Anaya Aguilar, that the municipal authorities intervened to bring both sides together to reach an agreement.

«With knowledge, common sense and understanding on both sides, the director of Urban Development, Gilberto Chairez, brought us together with the developers and we started working on the agreement. You have to understand that in this case, winning was not entirely winning,” said Fernando,  “ if we won, the developers could sue the municipality for granting permits that could not be executed, and if they won, their hotel would be  a target for further action because of the conditions under which the permits were granted,»  he explained.

After approximately ten months of meetings, an agreement was signed before a notary, with the legal description  of the land,  the approved project was registered before the Public Registry of Property (RPP), a Federal Judge and the Magistrate of the Administrative Court were notified. 

Every two months, they  (Federal Judge and the Magistrate ) receive progress reports on the work at the colonos’ office.

«They have only removed the first of the seven floors, and have stopped on the other two, because they need to reinforce the structure  before continuing to remove stories. They have complied and I am sure they will continue to comply,» said Platas.

Fernando commented that he feels satisfied with the work and the agreements reached after seven years of conflicts, and that neither he, nor the neighbors of La Floresta, are opposed to the developments, as long as they are coherent, have a balance, and also conserve the essence for which make the municipality of Chapala a popular  tourist destination.

Héctor Ruiz Mejía.- Se celebró con éxito, la primera edición del carnaval “Confeti, Magia y Diversión” en San Juan Cosalá, en el municipio de Jocotepec.

Entre fallas técnicas, carros alegóricos que no pudieron presentarse y más de media hora de retraso, el desfile en el que participaron más de 200 personas, entre ellas alrededor de 150 niños, arrancó casi a las 5:00 de la tarde desde la calle Cardenal Sur.

El contingente recorrió las principales calles de la delegación para culminar en la plaza principal sobre Porfirio Díaz, la comparsa brindó poco más de una hora de risas, colores y música, pero, sobre todo, tranquilidad.

A decir de sus organizadores, esta nueva versión del desfile de Martes de Carnaval se creó con la intención de que la gente pasara un buen rato en familia, sin el temor de ser llenado de harina, pues siempre quedan inconformidades entre los habitantes.

“Me pareció muy buena idea, la verdad a mí no me gustaba asistir al carnaval porque son muy manchados con la harina, pero creo que este de confeti es muy buena idea”, comentó Carmen López, quien junto con sus hijos pequeños disfrutó del confeti, las risas y las sacayas.

No obstante, hubo dentro de las personas que asistieron al evento, quienes argumentaron que lo divertido del carnaval, es llenarte de harina, “eso es lo chido, a eso viene uno a echar y a que te echen harina”, comentó Ramón.

Casi en simultáneo al desfile de confeti, se realizó otro de harina, el cual registró una participación de aproximadamente más de 400 personas.

Con un ambiente ya no tan familiar, la encarnizada batalla de harina pintó de blanco a prácticamente cualquier persona, entre peatones, automovilistas y ciclista que se transportaba por la delegación.

“Se manchan, yo solo iba aquí pasando en la camioneta y me aventaron toda la harina, vea como me dejaron”, aseveró abnegado un transeúnte que pretendía llegar a la cabecera municipal, más no contaba que llegaría “pareciendo gasparín”.  

Al término del evento de confeti, sus organizadores aseguraron que pese al poco tiempo que tuvieron para llevar a cabo dicho evento, fue todo un éxito; y esperan que el siguiente año se vuelva a realizar, esta vez con más preparación y más participantes.

Jazmín Stengel.- Diferente pero divertido, este año abundaron las coronas y enterraron al Covid-19. Tras un año de ausencia, el Carnaval de Chapala 2022 regresó con mucho tequila, bailes y charreadas, además de coronar a la nueva reina de belleza.

Las festividades comenzaron el 25 de febrero con el primer recibimiento en la plaza principal. Mientras los asistentes esperaban con impaciencia el cajón fúnebre para iniciar con el entierro del mal humor, la Palapa del Guayabo repartió vampiritos de cortesía para ambientar al público.

Pasadas las 3:00 de la tarde los organizadores lograron hacer un féretro de última hora, en que Felipe Ortega, Rey de la Alegría, se acostó con un letrero que decía “Adiós Covid”, con el deseo de enterrar la actual pandemia de coronavirus. 

Los habitantes de Chapala bailaron sobre el cajón de madera al ritmo de la banda local hasta comenzar el recorrido encabezado por el Rey Feo, Omar Alejandro Esparza Urzúa y el Rey David, Alejandro Selis López que concluyó con la quema del mal humor en la playa Chacaltita frente a la fuente de los pescadores del malecón de Chapala con casi 200 asistentes.

La celebración siguió en el Lienzo Charro J. Jesús González Gallo con el jineteo de los toros de la ganadería de Neto Díaz y la presentación de las candidatas a Reina del Carnaval Chapala 2022: María Alcalá, Anahí Mora y Esmeralda de la Torre. Las jóvenes participantes concursaron en tres etapas: baile, pasarela y preguntas; resultando María Alcalá, originaria de la cabecera, la merecedora a la corona.

Durante el fin de semana, además del jaripeo por parte de los toros Los Intocables de los Hermanos Gómez y los toros Los Explosivos de Raúl De La Torre, se presentaron populares agrupaciones mexicanas del género grupero como Mi Banda El Mexicano, Julio Preciado, Banda Astilleros entre otras. 

A diferencia de otros años, desde el primer día y hasta el último hubo recibimiento. El martes 1 de marzo la comida fue por parte de los hermanos De la Torre y familia, mientras que la bebida fue repartida y donada por personal del Ayuntamiento de Chapala.

En la plaza principal los organizadores aprovecharon para entregar reconocimientos a los ganadores de las charreadas y patrocinadores del evento. El mismo día se clausuró la exposición de fotografía histórica de Chapala, exhibida a un costado de la plaza principal durante las festividades con alegoría al carnaval.

Tras un largo recibimiento por el cierre del carnaval, los ciudadanos de Chapala regresaron nuevamente al Lienzo Charro J. Jesús González Gallo para disfrutar del último jaripeo acompañados de los famosos cantantes Virlán García y Jorge Medina, exintegrante de la famosa Arrolladora Banda El Limón. 

Los tres reyes

Omar Alejandro Esparza Urzúa fue oficialmente el Rey Feo del Carnaval Chapala 2022, sin embargo, no fue el único, «ni estaba feo» opinó el público durante los festejos de este año.

Quien se robó el corazón del pueblo por su carisma fue Alejandro Selis López, nombrado como el Rey David. «Siempre me hicieron el fuchi», dijo el entrevistado, quien aseguró que a pesar de haber querido participar en la convocatoria anteriormente, siempre fue ignorado por los organizadores.

Selis López, fue también Rey Feo en el 2020 donde recolectó dinero para apoyar a instituciones que tienen bajo su cuidado a niños con cáncer o enfermedades terminales. 

Por su parte, Felipe Ortega, quien también ha sido Rey Feo de Chapala en ocasiones pasadas, representó este año al Rey de la Alegría. Ortega disfrutó de su papel los cinco días de carnaval, ya que «al fin y al cabo es lo mismo», afirmó.

Armando Esquivel.- Con mucho ánimo y entusiasmo, aunque no tan lucidor como otros años, se llevó a cabo el desfile de Martes de Carnaval Ajijic, al cual arribaron centenares de personas que terminaron bañadas en harina, incluido el presidente municipal de Chapala, Alejandro Aguirre, quien acompañó el desfile  en una camioneta Can-Am. 

La Delegación Ajijic fue el primer carro alegórico, en el que un grupo de payasitos y payasitas iban aventando dulces y confeti, luciendo una decoración hecha en papel de china, telas y globos de colores, mientras que por detrás circulaban tres carros de golf con miembros de la comunidad extranjera a bordo, que arrojaban dulces a los asistentes. Sin embargo, los extranjeros no pudieron terminar el recorrido debido a que los autos eléctricos se quedaron sin batería.

El barrio de San Sebastián junto con la familia Martínez, participó con un carro en el que iban personas disfrazadas arrojando harina y dulces, atrás de ellos otro carro con jóvenes vestidas alusivas al carnaval. El ritmo de dos batucadas y una banda pusieron sabor al ambiente.  La comunidad fitness presentó un carro alegórico con sayacas gimnastas, en otro carro iban las “conejitas” playboy que arrojaban harina a los presentes. 

Uno de los carros más esperados fue el colchón de harina, el cual fue renombrado como el “covicolchón”: fueron personajes con máscaras de la lucha libre los encargados de cargar a las “víctimas” hasta el colchón para llenarlos de harina.  Un carro con un toro de papel maché con su jinete, un molino con edecanes y otro carro con sayacos revolucionarios, portando rifles de aire y hasta un cañón que arrojaba harina, terminaron por darle color al desfile, que finalizaba con una veintena de charros montados a caballos. 

En lo que respecta a la visita del alcalde al carnaval, su equipo a última hora colocó una bocina para que la unidad en la que se transportaba tuviera algo de música, también le arrimaron paletas para que las aventara al público. Muchos se acercaron al alcalde para saludarlo, hacerle peticiones o hasta tomarse la foto, aunque hubo uno quien le aventó uno que otro silbido.

Luego de aproximadamente una hora y 40 minutos, el contingente llegó a la plaza principal, en donde una nube de harina recibió a los carros alegóricos y las sayacas, haciendo visible la nutrida asistencia a lo que muchos consideran el mejor carnaval de la ribera.   

Los incidentes fueron menores, con algunos detalles como la separación y distanciamiento del contingente, la salida de los carros de golf a medio recorrido ante la baja de las baterías, dos vehículos que no fueron removidos del trayecto del desfile y el reporte de una persona de la tercera edad que cayó ante la estampida de la punta del desfile, pero el presunto hecho no fue incluido en el parte de novedades de las autoridades de Chapala.   

Luego de concluido el desfile de Martes de Carnaval Ajijic 2022, las calles del Pueblo Mágico lucieron vacías, con paredes y su empedrado blanqueado por la harina y con algunos colores que dejó el confeti, así como con el deseo en los habitantes y visitantes de volver a vivir la tradición.

Eva Longoria in Mezcala de la Asunción. 

Eva Longoria, an American actress of Mexican descent, visited Mezcala de la Asunción, on the shores of Lake Chapala on February 24th.

Longoria is working on a project to film CNN’s “Buscando a México» , a series about Mexican food, which will premier later this year. During her visit to the Riviera, the actress was at the restaurant Paraje Insurgente and filmed some scenes on the island of Mezcala. 

She was also captured eating a torta ahogada in the city of Guadalajara as part of the production. The actress will travel much of the nation for the project.

Sofía Medeles (Ajijic).- The Association of Charros will celebrate the Carnival of Ajijic, from February 27 to March 1, 2022 with equestrian and bull roping, riding, and tying events enlivened by musical groups in the charro ring. 

Ernesto Perez Reyes, the current president of the association, extended an invitation to the general public to attend the events. Tickets will be sold at the box office and the events  will begin at 4:30 in the afternoon. 

On the first day of the carnival, Sunday, February 27,2022, the groups that will perform will be Banda Perla Azul de Cuexcomatitlán, La Equidad Norteña, and Banda Estrellas del Lago. Tickets will cost 150 pesos per person. 

On Monday February 28, Banda Nueva Casta and Santiago Guzmán y su Astro Norteño will perform. Tickets will cost 100 pesos. Closing the carnival at the charro ring on March 1 will be Banda del 70 and Banda Auténtica de La Barca. The cost of tickets for this final celebration is 180 pesos per person. 

Perez Reyes asked that attendees wear masks at all times, and to refrain from going if they have symptoms of Covid-19. 

«In this ongoing pandemic situation, the guidelines and restrictions will be respected. It is this observation of COVID protocols that has allowed us to celebrate the carnival, albeit responsibly,» he concluded.

Sofía Medeles(Ajijic).- Despite the modifications imposed by health authorities to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ajijic Carnival will keep the usual schedule and route of the celebrations. 

Acting Delegado Maximiliano «Max» Macías Arceo announced  that there will only be three days of festivities:  the parades on February 27 and 28 and the Shrove Tuesday parade on March 1.

On Sunday and Monday, the sayacas, the main character of the festivities, will leave at 11:00 a.m. from the Campos family home, located on Hermenegildo Galeana Street between Zaragoza and Ocampo. They will take Zaragoza, Álvaro Obregón and Ocampo streets until they reach La Floresta in the east of the town. This year the Charros Association decided to omit the traditional «toro de once» and the reception or refreshment to avoid crowds.  

The Shrove Tuesday parade will also begin at 11:00 a.m.  crossing the town  on Ocampo, passing by the «Seis Esquinas» square, and taking Hidalgo to end at the main square of Ajijic.

Max Macías said that at least ten floats will participate, without ruling out the possibility of others joining in. 

«Few signed up, but some let me know of their participation informally. The parade floats will be arranged according to the order of registration to maintain order,» he added. In addition, he asked parade attendees to wear masks, as well as to try to disperse as soon as the parade passes.

«The Board of Health of Jalisco put restrictions on events  and far from ignoring them, we must make an effort to follow them. We are reviving traditions little by little and we want to do things right», said Max Macias

Redacción.- La ciudad de Guadalajara celebrará del dos al cinco de marzo el festival GDLuz en su quinta edición, como parte de los festejos del 480 aniversario de la fundación de la capital del estado de Jalisco.

La celebración se realizará a lo largo de dos kilómetros del centro de la ciudad, desde el Mercado Corona hasta el Hospicio Cabañas, donde las personas podrán disfrutar de videomappings, espectáculos multimedia, iluminación ambiental, música en directo, instalaciones artísticas y performance, en horarios de 08:00 a 11:30 de la noche.

El festival contará con seis accesos principales ubicados en el Instituto Cultural Cabañas, Palacio de Gobierno, Paseo Fray Antonio Alcalde y Mercado Corona.

Algunas vialidades alrededor del Centro Histórico se cerrarán a partir de las 5:00 de la tarde, como las siguientes: avenida Hidalgo, calle Morelos, y Pedro Moreno, en su cruce con González Ortega; además de la avenida Hidalgo, desde Contreras Medellín hasta Calpulalpan, en el lado poniente.

En el lado sur las vialidades que se cerrarán serán desde la Calle Juárez hasta calle Huerto y al norte, la calle Juan Manuel, desde Paseo Fray Antonio Alcalde hasta Dr. Baeza, además de Independencia desde Paseo Fray Antonio Alcalde hasta Calpulalpan y finalmente de Carriles extrema derecha, desde Avenida República, hasta Calle Cabañas.
