Honey, can you tell if the light on the Carretera is red yet?

I can’t see it.  I think the green light is broken, or at least so dim it is invisible.  But I have to practically lean out of the window to see it and I can’t do that in this blouse. Can you see the other light?

There is no other light, hon, that is why I need to know about the lights on the Carretera.

Why didn’t they put a light on the other side of the highway?

I don’t know, honey.  Maybe the same reason they don’t fix the lights when they burn out or get damaged. Just look at this one next to us – it looks like a truck killed it and it is not quite ready to die.  Hold it, this delivery van wants to turn into the street  here so I have to back up so he can get in. 

I think we just got a green – the car facing us is starting into the intersection. Try your left turn now. They have a light on this side they can see.

As soon as this truck lets me move, hon.  Damn…the light just went red again. Now we have to wait through another cycle.  What idiot designed this intersection?

You know who – the same so-called Federal  engineer who designed the Walmart intersection. Why don’t you just turn right and then make a u-turn?

Nicely done, dear.  Driving in this town is like playing a video game.

Hon, video games are easier- everything generally works and there is a help desk.  Would you look at the signal at Juarez, just hanging down like that. If this is a Federal highway, the Mexican government should be embarrassed.

If the Administration is not embarrassed by the Maya Tren fiasco and the abandoned airport and the collapsing metro in Mexico City,  the lack of traffic lights in Ajijic won’t phase them.

Hon, you are so right. Now, tell me why is it that the Federal highway workers can shut down the Carretera  in rush hour to resurface the road which they could have done at night much faster, but they can’t manage to fix the broken traffic lights? Can’t Chapala do anything?

They tried, but it is a Federal highway.  Remember when the Chapala Director of Mobility got so frustrated with no-shows from the Feds he went out and synchronized the lights himself.

I do. One of my Mexican  beer buddies  suggested dumping truckloads of horse manure in front of the Federal Transportation office in Guadalajara until they get the message that their roads are not fit for cars.

I don’t think it would help, dear.  They don’t care and they have so much horse pucky of their own that they shovel at us, they probably wouldn’t even notice.

So true.  Wait, did the light just turn green?

Sofía Medeles (Ajijic, Jal.)-  Gay activists painted a zebra crossing with the colors of the rainbow flag Wednesday to make the LGBTTTIQ+ community visible in Lakeside.

Before painting the crosswalk, General director of Guadalajara Pride, Johnny Cobian explained that they were not doing a simple painting, but a political disobedience, a form of protest to tell the residents of Lakeside that they are there, they want to be visible, and, above all, to be respected.

«This action  is also to tell our sisters and brothers that they are not alone, because there are those who do not dare to express their sexuality out of fear, so we want to tell them  that here we are, fighting shoulder to shoulder, which is one of the objectives of this proud first year in Ajijic, and although they are few, the most important marches began with 10 people. In the future, this will be much bigger than today,» said Cobian.

The action was held in November instead of  during  the June festivities of the LGBTTTIQ+ community  because it celebrated an important event to the Mexican Gay community, the  so-called «Dance of the 41», a police raid that took place on November 17, 1901, to arrest a group of 42 men in dresses and ball gowns  at a dance., including Ignacio de la Torre y Mier, son-in-law of the then president, Porfirio Diaz, who was spared.

The activists invited the people of Chapala both inside and outside the movement to the parade on Saturday, November 20, starting at 4 p.m. in Chapala starting at  Cristianía Park and marching through the city to a small festival.

Sofía Medeles (Ajijic, Jal.)- The walkway at Colón and Morelos streets, in the downtown area of Ajijic, was received with good comments by Ajijitecos, and will be set up  on weekends and holidays, authorities told Laguna.

The space set aside for pedestrians is only on the east side of the road, where cones have been placed  to indicate that there is no parking on that side, thus allowing tourists and locals to walk easily in the pathway created by the cones.

The person in charge of Ajijic’s office, Maximiliano «Max» Macías, explained that, both a survey in social networks and in person revealed a  positive response to the project, with a  small percentage  of negative opinion.

«I think it’s good, because this way the sidewalks are not so crowded, and there are no problems when passing people. And, since there are no people walking down the street, the flow of cars in that area is faster; it’s a very good idea». Photo: Sofía Medeles.

«For example, an American  commented that since there is nowhere to park, there are visitors who park at his door inconveniencing him. We are taking into account all opinions and not trying not to mpact anyone just to attract more tourism», said Max.

Ajijitecos interviewed by Laguna, confirmed what he said. Aurora, a young neighbor of Ajijic said, «I think it’s good, because this way the sidewalks are not so crowded, and there are no problems when passing people. And, since there are no people walking down the street, the flow of cars in that area is faster; it’s a very good idea». 

However, there was no lack of opposition comments which focused on the lack of parking on the main road.  

«This project is very unfortunate, because they removed parking spaces without offering an alternative solution. It is a good idea that they encourage people to walk, but what if someone with a disability wants to go to the Malecon? they would have to park far away, and there is nothing to do if they are late and need to be closer. Let’s hope they solve the problem soon,» shared a resident of Ajijic.

Finally, Max added that together with the municipal president, Alejandro Aguirre Curiel, they are looking for another parking lot, although  it may be difficult, since everything is very crowded. One solution could be to ask the merchants to leave the parking lots on the boardwalk free, he said. Finally, he asked the community of Ajijic to use the vehicle less, and try to move more on foot.

Patrick O’Heffernan, Ajijic.  Roy Gomez Cruz will return to the Concerts in the Park at LCS once again in the person of Freddie Mercury in two December 1 concerts that include a full Queen Live Band performance and a live and visual presentation of the “I Want It All :The Freddie Mercury Story”.

The Queen Live Band will perform onstage at LCS at 3:30. The band that dazzles audiences in the Palm Cabaret Club in Puerto Vallarta will bring its excitement to the LCS Park stage with favorites like We Will Rock You, We are Champions, Radio Ga Ga and Another One Bites the Dust.

At 6 pm Gomez returns in Mercury persona with   “I Want It All: The Freddie Mercury Story”, a high energy, visual and emotional journey through the songs and life events of the legendary Freddie Mercury. Gomez, who has a Master’s Degree  and is currently a PhD Candidate in Performance Studies at Northwestern University, immerses himself in the role of Freddie Mercury and amazes audiences with his detailed, authentic portrayal of the rocker. Palm Cabaret Entertainment Director Mark Rome, formally of the Spotlight in Ajijic, says, “I have never seen audiences embrace and enjoy a performance like this before,” of Gomez’s “I Want It All: The Freddie Mercury Story.

Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bulsara in 1946 and died in 1991) was a British singer, songwriter, record producer, and lead vocalist of the rock band Queen who is regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music. Known for his flamboyant stage persona and four-octave vocal range, Mercury defined  and redefined the conventions of a rock front man.

Tanto en la delegación de Ajijic (fotografía), como en las demás delegaciones del municipio, se pueden pedir dichos formatos. 

Sofía Medeles (Ajijic, Jal.)- Para denunciar la invasión de terreno federal ante la Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (PROFEPA), los pobladores deben llenar un formato que ya está disponible en las oficinas de las delegaciones del municipio de Chapala. El objetivo es que cualquier persona denuncie sin necesidad de presentarse en la cabecera municipal o en las oficinas del Gobierno de Jalisco. 

El formato –que solicita datos como detalles de la invasión, así como la dirección exacta de los hechos-, puede ser solicitado en las delegaciones, y tras detallar la denuncia, se deja ahí mismo para que se entregue a la sindicatura del municipio, informó Gamaliel de Jesús Soto Pérez, actual síndico del municipio de Chapala.

Sofía Medeles (Ajijic, Jal.)- Las denuncias a infractores de Ajijic serán recibidas, manteniendo el anonimato del quejoso, a través del número de WhatsApp: 33 3290 0382, el cual es manejado por el Encargado de Despacho Maximiliano “Max” Macías Arceo. 

Macías Arceo, también invitó a realizar los reportes por medio de la cuenta de Facebook  Delegación Ajijic 2021-2024, mediante un mensaje privado. Es decir, se podrá denunciar (bajo condición de anonimato) a personas que saquen la basura en horarios no correspondientes, que obstruyan banquetas y vialidades, entre otras situaciones que afecten la convivencia comunitaria.

Sofía Medeles (Ajijic, Jal.)- La Calle de los Murales se ha enriquecido con otra pintura realizada por el creador El artista originario de Ajijic, José Durán. 

Se trata de la calle Hidalgo, donde meses atrás Durán también plasmó una de sus obras; sin embargo, invita a la población artística a que se una con sus creaciones al proyecto artístico. 

La nueva creación –ubicada en la calle Hidalgo, casi al cruce con Niños Héroes-, se encuentra en una casa particular, enmarcada por un cuadro de concreto. La pintura cuenta la historia de Mónica (que también da nombre al mural), una joven que falleció a temprana edad, de quien principalmente destacan sus ojos (las ventanas del alma), con elementos como el ocaso, que representa el final de sus días, catrinas que son el presagio del fin de la vida, y la quietud del lago, representando la paz de la otra vida, explicó José Durán.

El pasado viernes 5 de noviembre fui testigo de una actividad cultural sin precedentes en Ajijic. Tres jóvenes vecinas de esta zona gestaron todo un acontecimiento en el que se conjugó el arte, el deporte, la antropología, el ambientalismo, la espiritualidad y la celebración, en un espacio y momento privilegiados a los que integraron: un atardecer frente al Lago de Chapala.

Una maestra de yoga, una artista del tatuaje y una fotógrafa y alpinista, con menos de veinte años cada una, convirtieron un recién estrenado estudio ubicado en el núcleo de la “vieja posada”, frente a la playa, en una fugaz galería en la que se expusieron una selección fotográfica de paisajes inalcanzables, rostros anónimos, arqueología y cultura del Perú.

Un pedacito de playa pegada al malecón y que usualmente se utiliza como vil estacionamiento, se convirtió por unas horas en un centro ceremonial a través de un modesto, pero significativo altar que poco a poco fue llenándose de flores y ofrendas de tabaco; pero también se transformó en un elegante, cómodo y generoso centro de intercambio social, gracias a un centenar de educados, sensibles y emocionados asistentes que disfrutamos al máximo la velada.

Rebeca, Claudina y Albertina se estrenan apenas en el ámbito de la producción y gestión cultural. Esa falta de experiencia, esa ingenuidad, hicieron fluir frescura, creatividad y propuesta. Se valieron de sus propias herramientas y sin necesitar el apoyo de nadie; crearon su propia atmósfera, plantearon su propio proyecto, ofrecieron su propia celebración.

Por si todo esto fuera poco, la capacidad de convocatoria de estas tres mujeres derivó en un muy amplio espectro, que igual atrajo a jóvenes como a adultos mayores; tanto extranjeros como originarios; mujeres y hombres; ricos y pobres. Un abanico de personalidades, intereses, orígenes y creencias. Algo sano y deseable, si queremos que el intercambio social y cultural de nuestra comunidad sea plural e incluyente.

Este tipo de propuestas son justamente las que Ajijic necesita. Las que plantean nuevos discursos. Las que resignifican espacios públicos que a pesar de ser privilegiados hoy están en abandono, en completo desuso, como es el caso de la playa que se ubica al oriente del malecón. Estas iniciativas nos recuerdan que, en el pueblo aunque es un destino de descanso para adultos mayores, también hay oferta y demanda de esparcimiento y consumo cultural, por parte de una población joven cada vez más involucrada y exigente.

“Tiempo-Espacio”, es el más que adecuado, revelador título de su exposición. A estas dos coordenadas, un mágico atardecer entre la “Vieja Posada” y nuestro lago, hay que añadir una tercera, dedicada a este trío que con su creatividad, energía y voluntad, creó un acontecimiento que será referente para la vida cultural de Ajijic.

A este pedacito de la nueva generación de artistas y promotores culturales de la ribera le doy mi reconocimiento y le invito a seguir siendo parte activa de nuestra comunidad. El pueblo les necesita a ustedes y a todo aquel que esté dispuesto a asumir riesgos y dedicar energía y creatividad para garantizar en Ajijic opciones para el fortalecimiento cultural de nuestra comunidad, el goce de la estética y una convivencia enriquecedora. Espero que pronto vuelvan a darnos otra sorpresa.

Banqueta frente a Farmacias Guadalajara, que está destruida por las raíces de los árboles y el paso de los años sin mantenimiento.

Sofía Medeles (Ajijic, Jal.)- Si usted ha caminado por algunas de las banquetas más dañadas de Ajijic, sin caerse, o al menos tropezarse –lo cual muchos consideran como un suplicio de su día a día, prefiriendo tomar rutas alternas- usted es acreedor a un premio, ya que, para muchos, estas banquetas representan un verdadero reto, tanto para mayores, embarazadas, personas con discapacidad y personas que necesitan usar carriolas.

Banqueta en la calle Guadalupe Victoria, la cual está rota debido a las raíces de un árbol. Un problema común al oriente del pueblo.

En un recorrido en carriola, realizado por Semanario Laguna, se percató de lo difícil que es pasar por algunas banquetas cuando se cuenta con limitados movimientos, ya que, las más dañadas tienen profundas grietas donde se atoran las llantas, bastones, e incluso los pies, causando tropiezos.

El departamento de Comunicación Social de la actual administración -encabezada por Alejandro de Jesús Aguirre Curiel-, aseveró que le corresponde al municipio el tema de las banquetas; sin embargo, aún y hasta el final de este año, no se cuenta con el recurso para ejecutar un proyecto de reparación de estas, aunque por su parte, si existe el compromiso.

“Es muy difícil pasar por las banquetas en mal estado para las personas con discapacidad. Una muy transitada y que les causa muchos problemas hasta los que están buenos y sanos, es la de en frente de Farmacias Guadalajara, además, dan mala imagen porque se encuentran en el cuadro principal del pueblo”, aseguró una persona mayor que utiliza bastón para apoyarse al caminar.

Asimismo, algunos otros entrevistados declararon que también se deberían de revisar las banquetas donde existen árboles que las han dañado con sus raíces, y determinar cuál sería la mejor opción -ya sea cortarlo o reducirlo-, debido a que podría también ser peligroso. “Para el peatón y para el auto es peligroso un árbol con las raíces así de expuestas. No se pide que se corten todos los árboles, pero sí que se llegue a una solución para este problema que se ve en todo el pueblo”, comentó una entrevistada.

Por otro lado, hay algunos que lo ven de manera más estética, ya que consideran que las banquetas desgajadas dan una mala imagen y descuidada a los visitantes del pueblo, especialmente en las calles principales. “Hay partes en las banquetas del centro donde ni siquiera están completamente dañadas, se puede pasar sin mayor problema, pero se están cayendo en los bordes, eso de una mala cara a turismo, damos a entender que nos valen nuestras calles principales”, aseguró un habitante de Ajijic que trabaja en el centro.

Por su parte, el Encargado de Despacho de la delegación, Maximiliano “Max” Macías Arceo, comentó que espera un recurso para la reparación completa de algunas banquetas, ya que, en este punto, no basta con parches, “hay algunas que se están cayendo y si se siguen parchando nunca van a quedar bien”.

Añadió que, “esperamos que pueda llegar el recurso y ejecutarse de esta manera, para además de repararlas, mejorarlas y hacerlas incluyentes, como por ejemplo con rampas. Además, poder también reparar las calles completas, ya no solo bachear, siempre respetando el tiempo de la obra anunciada y de la mano del comité Pueblo Mágico para conservar los elementos del pueblo”, concluyó el Encargado de Despacho de la delegación.

Sofía Medeles (Ajijic, Jal.)- Last Monday, personnel from the Ajijic delegation began cleaning an area of the highway and formed a strategy to continue cleaning, as well as making a plan to avoid littering at points and times where the garbage truck does not pass.

The area that was cleaned was from the highway, between the crossroads with Revolucion and Encarnación Rosas, along the entire roadside, as well as the cleaning of the planters, located on the side of the main road.

«The people shared with us their complaints, that in this area it is normal to take out garbage from before, for the moment, to combat these actions signs were sent to make signs with the number of the delegation to make complaints, whoever leaves their garbage and is caught will be sanctioned,» said the Head of Office Maximiliano «Max» Macias.

The interviewee shared that as part of his strategy to keep the town clean, garbage drums will be removed in places such as the so-called Placita de las Banderas. «One of the things that will be done is to eliminate cans. For example, in the Plaza de las Banderas where there are two drums, there are some people who take out garbage from home all day and every day, when they (the drums) are removed in these places, a sign will also be put up urging people to only take out the garbage on their corresponding schedule and days; if not, they will be sanctioned.»

As for the town’s streets, he affirmed that he, together with the workers of the delegation, are creating an organization chart of the town’s zones, and will be in charge of cleaning at least one day during the week, if possible on Saturdays -in conjunction with volunteers, for example, the students of CETAC-, also placing signs at points where garbage is usually placed.

Likewise, to keep the roadside planters clean, his idea is to collaborate with parks and gardens to help beautify the area and invite businesses to adopt a tree or plant from the boxes, to do their bit and support them by taking care of them and giving them maintenance.

Finally, he commented that the cleanliness of the town depends on everyone, and that although his job would be to initiate and set an example, it also depends on the ajijitecos to help; for example, by cleaning the facades of their houses or helping to take out the garbage at the corresponding times and days to their homes.
